Women's Tennis Rallies, Beats Dayton In A-10 Quarterfinals
04/18/2015 | Women's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite the tough heat indoors at The Boars Head Sports Club, the Richmond Spiders were able to use a third-set tiebreaker at #4 singles to halt a surging Dayton Flyers team and advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship with a nail-biting 4-3 triumph.
Richmond took the first point of the match, winning first at top doubles, then on number three doubles, both with scores of 8-5.
With the match tied at three, Brittany Boys (UR) and Carly Peck (UD) battled to a third-set tiebreaker. Boys rallied from down 4-2 in the break to win the final set, 7-6(4) and the match for the Spiders.
"I don't usually like to single out players. It's a team effort," said Coach Mark Wesselink. "But today Anna Abadias Morales was dominant at #1, Kelsey Williams fought so hard to get our 3rd point and then Brittany Boys stepped up under huge pressure to play her best tennis and clinch the match. Dayton was impressive and it took our best effort."
Richmond will face third-seeded Massachusetts Saturday at 1:30 pm. The Minutewomen defeated No. 6 Duquesne, 4-1. The first semifinal pits top seed VCU against No. 5 Fordham.
