04/19/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) made her sixth and final save on a free position shot in the final second of regulation to preserve a 10-9 home win over Duquesne Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse at Robins Stadium. The exciting final home game for the Spiders featured five tie scores and six lead changes.
The win was the first in the regular season for Richmond against the Dukes in the past four seasons and it pushed the Spiders' record to 8-7 overall, 5-1 in the A-10, alone in second place. The Dukes slipped to 7-8 overall, 3-3 in the league. The Dukes lost both road games in this weekend road trip. Richmond finishes the season 6-2 at home.
The game was tied at eight with just under 14 minutes to go in regulation when the senior pair of Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) and Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey) connected for the final go-ahead goal with just under eight minutes remaining. The goal was Zerr's 24th of the season and the assist was Doyle's team-leading 26th of the year. She also leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in that category.
Doyle added a needed insurance goal less than a minute later on an unassisted score for her team-best 27th of the year.
The Dukes got a late goal at the 3:38, but the Spiders held on with the late Boyce save to get the win in the home finale.
Duquesne's Kaelin Shaw and Michelle Morris had three goals each.
Doyle and junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) has three goals each to lead the Spiders. Two of Stevenson's goals were on free position shots, and her last two goals broke tie-score situations.
The Spiders won two out of every three draws (14-7) and out shot the Dukes 25-19 in the contest.
Four players had two assists each, two from each team. Doyle and freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) had a pair of assists for the Spiders. Doyle's pair gives her 98 for her career, extending her own school-record total. She has also breached the 50-point mark for third time in her career.
Boyce's six saves pushed her season total to 107, a new personal best for a year in her career. She is now 8-7 on the year, 22-22 for her career.
All six Richmond seniors started the game and recorded stats in their respective columns. Midfielder Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) had a goal and won five draws. Midfielder Erin Marie Geoghan (Highland, Maryland) collected a pair of ground balls and won one draw. Defender Katie Cahill (Medford, New Jersey) also collected a ground ball in the defensive end.
Richmond will finish the year at first-place Masaachusetts next Friday at 4 p.m. and at La Salle Sunday at 1 p.m. Richmond has virtually clinched a spot in the following weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, but there is one scenario in which the Spiders could lose out on a tiebreaker. At least a split of next weekend's action would guarantee the Spiders a spot in the four-team tournament, which begins at George Washington on Friday, May 1.
