04/24/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) scored twice, but the Richmond Spiders women's lacrosse team dropped its second-straight road game, 14-3 at league-leader Massachusetts Friday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
The win gives the Minutewomen (15-1, 7-0 A-10) the regular-season crown and the Spiders (8-8, 5-2) stay in a tie for second in the league standings.
Egizi scored the game's first goal just 87 seconds into the contest on an assist from senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey), the 99th of her career. She is the all-time leader in assists for the Spiders.
A little more than three minutes later, senior Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) made it 2-0 Spiders with her 22nd goal of the season.
UMass then scored the last eight goals of the first half to take an 8-2 lead to the break. Richmond won seven of the 11 first-half draws, but UMass took 15 shots to UR's eight in the first 30 minutes.
Like in the first half, Egizi scored the first goal, just 39 seconds into play. It was her 20th goal of her freshman campaign. UMass scored the last six goals of the game, including a goal with two seconds in regulation.
The Spiders will attempt to clinch a spot in next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships in their final regular-season game Sunday, at La Salle, beginning at 11 a.m. The Spiders guarantee a spot in the Championships with a win, but depending on other outcomes, Richmond can qualify for the tournament no matter the result of the game.
