Pitching, Home Runs Propel Spiders Past UMBC

OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team won its sixth-straight game on Thursday afternoon, beating St. Bonaventure, 4-3, in game one of a doubleheader.

With the victory, Richmond improves to 15-8 on the season overall and to 6-1 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the loss, St. Bonaventure falls to 10-7-1 on the year and to 0-4 in league play.

RHP Ryan Cook (4-1) pitched a season-high seven innings to earn his fourth win of the year. Cook allowed three runs on six hits, striking out two. RHP Ray Harron tossed two shuout innings to earn his third save of the year, striking out three.

Offensively, C Aaron Newman went 3-for-4 with a RBI, while 3B Matt Dacey had a RBI double. OF Jansen Fraser, 2B Daniel Brumbaugh and DH Kyle Adams each drove in a run for the Spiders in the victory.

After a scoreless first three innings, the Spiders got on the board first in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and third with one out, Brumbaugh plated Adams with a RBI groundout to first base.

In the next inning, Richmond scored three runs to push its lead to 4-0 at St. Bonaventure. Dacey got the scoring going with a RBI double down the right-field line to make the lead 2-0. Three batters later, Fraser plated another run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Newman capped the scoring, singling to center field to score Adams and give the Spiders a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings.

The Bonnies answered, however, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the Richmond lead to 4-3.

Coming in after Cook in the bottom of the eighth, Harron and the catcher Newman teamed up for a strike out, throw out double play as Newman cut down his second potential base stealer of the game to end the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Harron worked a perfect, 1-2-3 inning to nail down the save and secure the 4-3 win for Richmond in game one of the doubleheader.
