Stoops' Gem Leads Spiders Over Bonnies To Complete Sweep
04/03/2015 | Baseball
OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure on the road Friday afternoon, 8-1.
Winners of eight-straight and 11 of their last 12 games, Richmond improved its overall record on the season to 17-8 and their A-10 mark to 8-1 on Friday. St. Bonaventure falls to 10-9-1 on the year and to 0-6 in league play.
Richmond's 8-1 start in the A-10 is the best since 2002, when the Spiders started conference play at 12-0. That team went on to the NCAA Super Regional and posted a program-record 53 wins.
The eight-game winning streak for the A-10 leading Spiders is the longest since the team won 11 in a row in 2012. With the three-straight wins over the Bonnies, Richmond has posted back-to-back sweeps of conference opponents for the first time since 2005.
LHP Dylan Stoops (2-0) posted one of the finest outings of his career for Richmond, tossing a complete game. Stoops allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out six.
Offensively, Richmond was led by OF Jansen Fraser, who batted 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. Freshman DH Kyle Adams plated two runs for UR, while OF Michael Morman had two hits and a RBI. SS Tyler Beckwith also had a RBI for the Spiders, while 3B Matt Dacey tallied a pair of hits on the day.
"I really like the way we came out today and handled our business," Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. "Dylan Stoops was great for us today. He scattered his hits and made some really big pitches when he needed to make them."
Richmond spread out its runs against the Bonnies on Friday, scoring runs in five of the nine innings. The Spiders scored two runs in both the second and third to take a 4-1 lead over St. Bonaventure. UR then tacked on a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to give Stoops a comfortable lead.
In the ninth, Stoops allowed a pair of base runners, but finished strong, striking out a pair and inducing a groundout to secure the win and the three-game sweep for Richmond.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action on Wednesday, when the team will play Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. at 6 p.m.
