OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team won its seventh-straight game on Thursday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure with a 3-1 victory.
With the win, Richmond improves to 16-8 on the season overall and to 7-1 in the Atlantic 10. With the loss, St. Bonaventure falls to 10-8-1 on the year and to 0-5 in league play.
“I thought we did a great job of going about our business today,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the doubleheader sweep. “In game one, we really just wanted to throw Ryan Cook and Ray Harron and we were able to do that. In game two, we honestly got more out of Brendan McGuigan than we could have hoped for. He was fantastic out there today.”
Freshman RHP Brendan McGuigan (2-0) was terrific for the Spiders on Thursday, pitching six shutout innings to earn his second win of the season. McGuigan allowed just four hits, while striking out five. RHP James Lively pitched two solid innings of relief, while RHP Dan Martinson tossed a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the year.
At the plate, freshman 2B Daniel Brumbaugh had a pair of hits and a RBI, while OF Michael Morman had a RBI double. Freshman DH Kyle Adams had two hits in the victory.
In the top of the second inning, Richmond took a 1-0 lead over the Bonnies on a RBI groundout off the bat of Brumbaugh. Four innings later, the Spiders doubled their lead thanks to a throwing error from the St. Bonaventure third baseman.
After the Bonnies cut the Richmond lead in half, 2-1, with a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Spiders added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
After a leadoff double from Brumbaugh, Morman crushed a double to left-center field, easily scoring the freshman from second base to make the UR lead, 3-1, headed to the final half inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bonnies got a leadoff single, but Martinson and the Spiders allowed no further damage, securing the doubleheader sweep with a 3-1 win on the road.
The Richmond Spiders will look for its second-straight, three-game sweep of an A-10 opponent on Friday, when the team concludes its set at St. Bonaventure. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
