RHP Ryan Cook (6-2) was great again for the Spiders on Friday, pitching six strong innings to earn the win. Cook struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing three runs on seven hits. Both RHP Keenan Bartlett and RHP James Lively pitched scoreless innings of relief for UR, while RHP Ray Harron pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to earn his team-leading fifth save of the season.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Spiders jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Leading off the frame, Dacey tripled to deep center field to put a run just 90-feet away. Stanley followed and promptly scored Dacey with a RBI groundout to second base, giving Richmond a 1-0 lead.
The Explorers answered right back, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Spiders after six complete innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Spiders rallied for four runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. After a leadoff single from DH Kyle Adams, 1B Doug Kraeger reached base on a La Salle error. C Aaron Newman followed with a single to left to load the bases.
One batter later, Brumbaugh tied the game with a two-run single to center field – his second hit of the game. Beckwith followed, smashing a triple to left-center field to give the Spiders a 5-3 lead.
The Spider bullpen was perfect on Friday afternoon, as the trio of Lively, Bartlett and Harron combined to throw three perfect innings of relief to seal the road victory for Richmond.
