Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Richmond Spiders track and field team held its own against the nation's top teams this weekend at the Penn Relays.
Thursday the Spiders got out to a strong start, with junior Janel Francis placing 15th of 79 long jumpers. Despite the tough weather, she was able to achieve a distance of 5.55 meters.
The distance medley relay team followed her earlier later in the evening. Marisa Ruskan, Jade Gregory, Alyson McGonigle and Amanda Corbosiero placed third overall in the event with a time of 11:47.18.
The momentum didn't slow for the Spiders on Friday, as Liz Montague jumped for 11.76 meters in the triple jump.
Once again on Friday, Richmond competed in a relay event to end the evening. This time, Deborah Fajuyigbe, Janel Francis, Jade Gregory and Taylor Clevinger ran the sprint Mmedley, where they won their section and placed 12th of 38 teams.
To close out the relays Saturday, the Spiders also competed in the 4x800 relay. Alyson McGonigle, Taylor Clevinger, Stephanie Hughes and Haley Preschutti achieved a time of 8:56.40.
Men's cross country team member Tim Gruber also ran at the relays unattached. Gruber earned sixth overall in the 10,000 meters, for a time of 30:53.69.
These strong performances put Richmond in an excellent place for next weekend, when the Spiders compete at the 2015 outdoor Atlantic-10 Championships.
