PHILADELPHIA - A run of nine-straight goals in the first half propelled Richmond into second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 19-11 win at La Salle to conclude the regular season Sunday at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia. The win pushes the Spiders to 9-8 overall, 6-2 in the A-10.
The Spiders clinched a spot in this week's Atlantic 10 Championships, hosted by George Washington. Richmond will be in the second semifinal, which begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. La Salle finishes a game out of the A-10 Championships, at 8-8 overall, 4-4 in the league standings.
Down 3-2 with 18:22 to go in the first half, the Spiders reeled off nine consecutive goals to blow open the game and cruise to the win.
"We talked before the game that it would take a total team effort and that's what we got today," said Richmond head coach Allison Kwolek.
"We outhustled them and played with a lot of grit. It all started with winning the draw. If Queally didn't get it, Bailey or Anna came up with the ball. It definitely helped to come up with the ball and sustain momentum. All in all, we played with a lot of confidence and didn't turn the ball over and we moved it well. This gives us great momentum going into the A-10 Tournament."
Senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) and junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) had four goals each to lead the Spiders.
Freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) tied her career high with four assists and senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey) had three assists. Doyle became the first Richmond player to breach the 100-assist mark for her career. She stands at 102 for her career, extending her own school record.
The Spiders owned a 37-31 margin in shots and won three out of every four draws (24-8) in the contest. Freshman Caroline Queally (Riverside, Connecticut) won seven draws in the game to lead all players.
Senior starting goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) made eight saves and gave up seven goals in the win, her ninth (9-8) of the season.
The Spiders will play in the second semifinal, starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, against third-seeded Duquesne. The Dukes defeated George Mason to climb into a tie for third in the league standings. Richmond beat Duquesne 10-9 on senior day on April 19 at Robins Stadium.
Richmond advanced to the title game of last year's A-10 Championships at home, falling 10-6 against Massachusetts.
