DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders fell to the Duke Blue Devils, 7-4, at the Durham Bull Athletic Park on Wednesday night.
With the loss, Richmond snaps it's eight-game winning streak and falls to 17-9 on the season. Despite the loss, the Spiders are off to their best 26-game start since 2003, when the team began the year 21-5. With the win, Duke improves to 21-13 on the season.
Offensively, 3B Matt Dacey clubbed a three-run home run for the Spiders, while OF Michael Morman had a RBI double.
On the mound, both RHP Daniel Brumbaugh and RHP Zach Moore tossed scoreless innings of relief for Richmond. RHP James Lively (0-1) took the loss for the Spiders.
After Duke took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Spiders answered back with four runs of their own in the top of third. With runners on first and second base with no outs, Morman got the scoring started for Richmond with a RBI double off the wall in left field.
Dacey followed, crushing a first-pitch offering deep over the fence in center field to give Richmond a 4-2 lead. Dacey's homer was his Atlantic 10-leading eighth of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spiders suffered some self-inflicted damage, as Duke plated five runs in the inning on six walks and a sacrifice fly to take a 7-4 lead over Richmond.
In the top of the ninth, Richmond was unable to get a rally started and fell to the Blue Devils, 7-4.
The Richmond Spiders will host Sacred Heart this weekend at newly renovated Pitt Field for a three-game, non-conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. Sunday's finale is slated for 12 p.m.
