AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell on the road at Massachusetts in 10 innings on Friday afternoon, 3-2.
With the loss, Richmond drops to 21-18 overall and 10-6 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 12-22 on the year and to 8-8 in league action.
RHP Ryan Cook was great for the Spiders on Friday, pitching 7.1 strong innings in his start. Cook allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five. RHP Ray Harron (2-2) took the hard-luck loss for UR after 2.2 innings of relief.
Offensively, Richmond was led by OF Michael Morman, who batted 2-for-4 with a RBI double and a run scored. SS Tyler Beckwith had a double and scored a run for the Spiders.
After UMass took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Richmond responded in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. After a leadoff walk to Beckwith, Morman plated the junior with a RBI double to right-center field.
Matt Dacey followed, singling to right field. On the throw in to the infield, the ball got away from the Minutemen, allowing Morman to score from third on the error.
The Spiders had their chances to take the lead in the late innings, but weren't able to come up with the clutch hits. In the 10th, UMass had three-straight, one-out singles to win the game.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will continue its three-game, Atlantic 10 series at Massachusetts on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
