Late UMass Rally Pushes Minutemen Past Richmond, 5-4

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team lost to the Massachusetts Minutemen, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in Amherst, Massachusetts.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 21-19 on the season overall and to 10-7 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the victory, UMass improves to 13-22 on the year and to 9-8 in league action.
OF Daniel Brumbaugh led the Spider offense on Saturday, batting 2-for-3 with a RBI triple. SS Tyler Beckwith hit a solo home run, while both OF Michael Morman and 3B Matt Dacey had sacrifice flies for UR.
RHP James Lively was outstanding in relief for the Spiders, tossing three shutout innings, striking out five. LHP Zak Sterling got the start for Richmond, tossing four innings and allowing three runs.
The Spiders started Saturday's game with a bang, as Beckwith led off the top of the first with a solo home run to left-center field. The junior's sixth homer of the season gave Richmond a 1-0 lead.
After UMass tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, the Spiders grabbed the lead back in the top of the third. With C Brandon Johnson on second base after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, Brumbaugh gave UR the lead with a triple down the left-field line. The freshman looked to have an inside-the-park homer, but was called out at home on a bang-bang play at the plate to end the inning.
Richmond added a run in the top of the fourth to push the team's lead to two. After Morman led off the frame with a single, he moved to third base when OF Tanner Stanley reached on an error. Dacey followed, plating Morman with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After the Minutemen scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Spiders reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth with a run of their own on a Morman sacrifice fly.
Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth after three scoreless innings of relief from Lively, UMass scored a pair of runs in the frame to take a 5-4 advantage to the top of the ninth.
In the ninth, Richmond got the game-tying run on base after Jake Wood drew a walk, but were unable to rally, falling 5-4.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will conclude their three-game, Atlantic 10 series at Massachusetts on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
