Spider Baseball Sweeps Dayton With 7-4 Victory
05/10/2015 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Dayton on Sunday morning, 7-4, at Pitt Field.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 26-20 on the season overall and remains in a first-place tie in the Atlantic 10 with a conference mark of 14-7. With the loss, Dayton falls to 14-36 on the year and to 3-18 in league action. The series win for the Spiders is the first over the Flyers since the 2003 season.
“I thought we played well,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. “As the game went along, I thought we were getting some good swings, but Morman and Dacey's back-to-back home runs really set it up for us the rest of the way.”
On the mound, senior LHP Dylan Stoops (5-1) made his final start at Pitt Field a memorable one, pitching seven strong innings to earn the win. Stoops allowed just one run on only four hits while striking out six. RHP Ray Harron notched the game's final out to earn his eighth save of the year.
“This weekend was special with it being Senior Day yesterday and graduation today,” Stoops remarked following the game. “Coming out and sweeping this weekend was an unbelievable feeling.”
Offensively, Richmond was led once again by OF Michael Morman, who capped a terrific series against the Flyers by batting 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and a run scored. On the weekend, Morman batted 8-for-11 (.727) with four doubles, a homer, seven RBI and six runs scored.
3B Matt Dacey hit his A-10 leading 17th home run of the season, while both SS Tyler Beckwith and 2B Daniel Brumbaugh had a hit and RBI each in the win. With his blast, Dacey has now hit at least one homer in four of his last six games.
After a scoreless first two innings, Beckwith gave Richmond a 1-0 lead with a RBI double that one-hopped the fence in left-center field.
Three innings later, Morman and Dacey pushed the lead to 3-0 as the duo hit back-to-back solo homers over the left-field fence. Morman's long-ball was his fifth of the season, while Dacey's 17th of the year kept him in second place nationally and tops in the Atlantic 10.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Richmond scored four times in the bottom of the frame to push its lead to 7-1. In the inning, Brumbaugh had a run-scoring single, while Morman plated a run with a RBI double.
In the top of the ninth, Dayton tried to rally, scoring three times, but Harron came out of the bullpen and induced a game-ending groundout to secure the win and the sweep for the Spiders.
The Richmond Spiders will play their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, when the team travels to Charlottesville, Va. to play No. 24 Virginia. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
