Richmond Baseball Edged At Virginia, 8-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team lost at Virginia, 8-6, in a back-and-forth game in Charlottesville, Va.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 26-21 on the season overall, while the Cavaliers improve to 30-19 on the year.
Offensively, 10 Richmond players had at least one hit for the Spiders, while six had one RBI in the game. SS Tyler Beckwith had a solo home run for UR, while 3B Matt Dacey had two hits and a RBI. OF Michael Morman also had two hits for the Spiders, scoring twice.
On the mound, four players pitched two innings each for Richmond, with RHP James Lively (1-2) taking the hard-luck loss after surrendering a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the first inning, Richmond jumped out to a 3-0 lead at Virginia. With two on and one out, Dacey recorded his team-leading 50th RBI of the season with a run-scoring single to center field. Stanley followed with a RBI single of his own, while OF Jansen Fraser had a sacrifice fly to make the UR lead, 3-0.
After UVA scored four times in the bottom of the second, Richmond tied the game in the top of the third on a RBI groundout from DH Kyle Adams.
Trailing 5-4, Richmond tied the game for the second time in the top of the fourth on a RBI groundout from 2B Daniel Brumbaugh.
Virginia reclaimed the lead with one run in the bottom of the fifth, only to see the Spiders tie the game once more in the top of the sixth. In the frame, Beckwith took a 1-2 offering deep over the left-field fence for a no-doubt home run, tying the game at 6-6.
Richmond had a great opportunity to take a lead in the top of the eighth after back-to-back singles from OF Jansen Fraser and 1B Doug Kraeger. But Virginia was able to escape the inning unharmed after two strikeouts and a groundout.
In the bottom of the frame, Virginia took advantage of a Richmond error to score a pair of unearned runs to take a 8-6 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Richmond was unable to rally, as Virginia edged the Spiders, 8-6.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will head south to face Davidson in the team's final Atlantic 10 series of the season starting on Thursday at 6 p.m.
