Richmond Earns Road Win At Massachusetts, 10-7

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell to the No. 2-seeded Rhode Island Rams, 2-1, in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Friday night.

With the loss, No. 3-seeded Richmond (28-24) will face No. 6-seeded George Washington in an elimination game on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Barcroft Park.

LHP Dylan Stoops was outstanding in the start for the Spiders, pitching 7.1 innings. The senior allowed just one run on five hits, striking out three batters.

3B Matt Dacey batted 2-for-4 on the game with a run scored and a stolen base, while 1B Doug Kraeger had a hit and a RBI for the Spiders in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Richmond got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. After a leadoff single to right field from Dacey, the junior was moved to third base on a groundout to first from DH Kyle Adams. Up next was Kraeger, who plated Dacey with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Rhode Island put runners on first and second base to chase Stoops from the game. RHP Ray Harron entered for UR and induced a groundout for the second out of the frame.

URI's Chris Hess followed and hit a long, fly ball to center field. Richmond OF Tanner Stanley timed it perfectly, however, climbing the wall to rob Hess of extra bases and the Rams of runs to keep the game tied headed to the ninth, 1-1.

With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the ninth, the Spiders had the go-ahead run thrown out on a close plate at home. With Kraeger running from first on the pitch, OF Jansen Fraser singled through the right side. Rhode Island made a pair of nice relay throws, getting Kraeger at the plate to send the game to the bottom half still tied at 1-1.

In the ninth, Rhode Island loaded the bases with one out and walked off with a win after a grounder crept through the Richmond infield.
