AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Massachusetts Minutemen, 10-7, on the road on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 22-19 on the season overall and to 11-7 in Atlantic 10 play. With the loss, UMass falls to 13-23 on the year and to 9-9 in league action.
LHP Dylan Stoops (4-1) was terrific for Richmond on Sunday afternoon, pitching six strong innings to earn his fourth win of the year. The redshirt-senior allowed only two unearned runs, while striking out eight. RHP Ray Harron recorded the final two outs of the game to earn his sixth save of the season.
3B Matt Dacey led the Spiders offense on Sunday, batting 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. OF Tanner Stanley had a three-run homer, while OF Jake Wood had two hits and a RBI.
SS Tyler Beckwith also drove in a run in the win, while 1B Doug Kraeger had a pair of hits, including a triple, for the Spiders.
In the top of the first, the Spiders scored a pair of runs to take an early, 2-0 lead. With a runner on, Dacey crushed a two-run home run deep to center field, his Atlantic 10-leading 13th of the season, to give UR a 2-0 advantage.
Richmond added on in the second inning, pushing their lead to 3-0 on a two-out, RBI single that plated 1B Doug Kraeger who tripled earlier in the frame.
In the top of the third, Richmond doubled its lead to 6-0. After an error and a single, two runners were on for Stanley, who lined a three-run homer over the right-center field fence. The home run was the fifth of the season for Stanley.
After the Minutemen scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, Richmond responded in both the sixth and seventh innings.
In the sixth, both Brumbaugh and Dacey had RBI singles for the Spiders. In the seventh, the Spiders pushed the lead to 10-2 on a sacrifice fly from Beckwith and another RBI single from Brumbaugh.
In the ninth, UMass scored five runs, but it would not be enough as Richmond defeated the Minutemen, 10-7.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will be back on the field on Tuesday, when the team hosts in-state rival Longwood. First pitch at Pitt Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
