UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Dayton Flyers, 9-2, on Senior Day at Pitt Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Richmond moves to 25-20 on the season overall and remains tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 with a mark of 13-7. Dayton falls to 14-35 on the year and to 3-17 in league action.
Making his final start at Pitt Field, senior LHP Zak Sterling (4-1) was terrific for the Spiders on Saturday, pitching seven strong innings to earn the victory. Sterling allowed just two runs while striking out six. Out of the bullpen, both senior RHP Ray Harron and freshman RHP Keenan Bartlett pitched scoreless innings of relief for Richmond.
Offensively, the Spiders were led by junior 3B Matt Dacey, who batted 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a double and four RBI. Dacey's homer was his Atlantic 10-leading 16th of the season. OF Michael Morman continued his hot hitting, collecting a pair hits, including his 20th double of the season, while driving in a run.
Freshman OF Kyle Adams went 2-for-5 with a double, while 1B Doug Kraeger also had a pair of hits. OF Tanner Stanley had two hits and a RBI, while 2B Daniel Brumbaugh and DH Kurtis Brown also drove in runs in the victory.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first inning, Richmond went on to score the game's final nine runs, including two in the second, to take a lead the team would not relinquish.
Among the offensive highlights for Richmond was Dacey's homer in the bottom of the fifth. The junior hit a monster shot to center field, clearing the newly-installed batter's eye and hitting the Dayton bus in the parking lot. Dacey's 16 long-balls are the most in a season for a Spider since Chris Cowell hit 20 in 2012.
Prior to the game, Richmond honored its seven graduating student-athletes on the field. Those seniors being recognized were Joey Vecchione, Chris Bates, James Lively, Dylan Stoops, Harron, Ryan Cook and Sterling.
The third and final game of Richmond's series with Dayton will be on Sunday at Pitt Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
