09/12/2015 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – James Madison (3-1) scored two goals in the first half and went on to win 4-1 over the Richmond Spiders (2-3) in field hockey action on Friday night at Crenshaw Field.
The Dukes' Melissa Wilken and Loes Stijntjes each scored two goals on five shots, with two coming in the first half and two in the second half.
Richmond's Amanda Hoyt made seven saves in 67 minutes of work in goal as the Spiders went without a goalie in the final three minutes.
“Despite the outcome today, I thought that we played together and we played with passion,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “We have some very strong teams on our schedule in this first month, and these games are helping to show us where we need to focus and where we need to improve. I thought we took a big step forward today, and will continue to come together at Wake Forest on Sunday.”
UR's Emma Johansson came up big with 20 minutes left in the second half, pushing an attack and directing the ball around JMU's goalie in a physical play in front of the goal. The goal brought the margin to 3-1 and it was Johansson's first goal of the season.
JMU added one more goal with under 15 minutes left to get the final margin at 4-1.
Richmond returns to the road for a noon matchup at Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.
