No. 17 Iowa Overcomes Richmond In Second Half
09/05/2015 | Field Hockey
HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 17 Iowa scored two goals in the second half to pull away from Richmond for a 5-1 victory in non-conference play at JMU on Friday night.
The Spiders (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes despite a closely-fought first half.
After Iowa took an early 1-0 lead, Richmond responded with an equalizer from Kelly Quinn just four minutes in off an assist from Amy Cooke. It was Quinn's second goal of the season and Cooke's second assist of the season.
“The team showed resilience against a tough Iowa squad,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “Kelly Quinn had a poised finish off a 30-yard assist from Amy Cooke to tie the game up. We are working through some new concepts and got exposed today. I have no doubt the team will continue to sharpen themselves through our competitive scheduling. We will be primed for postseason play.”
However, Iowa battled back with two goals to build a 3-1 lead at halftime, and eventually built a 5-1 lead with two goals in the second half.
The game was delayed by lightning for nearly two hours with under 10 minutes remaining on the clock before the two teams eventually played out the final margin.
UR tallied 11 shots, including five on goal, with three of Cooke's four shots going on the goalkeeper. UR's goaltender Amanda Hoyt played the first half, allowing three goals with one save, while Emily Braunewell played the second half, picking up five saves with just two goals allowed.
Iowa's Makenna Grewe and Stephanie Norlander each scored two goals apiece with Mallory Lefkowitze tallying four assists.
The Spiders hit the road again on Tuesday, Sept. 8, for a non-conference bout at state rival Liberty. That match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
