01/14/2016 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (8-9, 1-3 A-10) had a lead at halftime but Saint Joseph's (9-7, 3-1 A-10) used a big run in the second half to jump ahead and hold off the Spiders for a 64-53 win. Janelle Hubbard did her best to carry Richmond with 25 points, moving into 18th on the all-time scoring list.
Hubbard made a career-best 11 shots from the floor and attempted a career-high 27 while going 2-8 from deep and 1-1 from the free throw line to make up her 25 points. She picked off three former stars on the all-time scoring list in the process. She began the game with 1,047 points and ended it with 1,072, passing Denise Winn (1,048), Jackie Isreal (1,067) and Dana Pappas (1,071).
Salita Greene played well to complement Hubbard, collecting the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also added four steals, a block and an assist to her line in 38 minutes of action. The freshman came into the game averaging 5.4 points and 5.4 rebounds this season in 20.9 minutes per game.
The defense held SJU to just 33.3 percent from the floor in the first half but allowed the Hawks to heat up and shoot 63.6 percent in the second half and finished at 47.8 percent for the game. SJU shot 26 free throws against Richmond's seven and outrebounded the Spiders 35-28.
The Spiders were the first on the scoreboard when Janelle Hubbard buried a jumper from 18 feet. With the basket, Hubbard moved into 20th on the Richmond all-time scoring list, passing Denise Winn with 1,049 points. That would not be all for Hubbard in the first quarter, who guided the Spiders with nine of the team's 16 points to secure a 16-12 advantage after one.
The first three minutes of the second quarter went scoreless as both defenses clamped down. Salita Greene snapped the drought with a driving layup at the 7:08 mark to move Richmond ahead by six, 18-12. Alicia Hudalla got into the act with a drive and score of her own and Greene gave the Spiders their largest lead of the game at the time with a jumper to make it 22-14.
With just under three minutes to play, SJU's Kathleen Fitzpatrick buried a triple that was answered by Hubbard on the other end to keep it a six-point Richmond advantage. Fitzpatrick answered with another triple to make it a three-point game with just over two minutes to play in the second quarter. Richmond made free throws down the stretch before half to take a 28-24 lead in to the locker room.
Hubbard canned 12 points in the first half on 5-14 shooting. The Spiders as a team shot 35.5 percent from the floor and held the Hawks to 33.3 percent. Kylie Murphree played all 20 minutes in the first half and contributed five points with a pair of free throws and a triple. Richmond scored first and never trailed in the opening half.
Richmond scored first in the second half on a Hubbard jumper in the lane and after a Parson step-back triple, led by eight with 8:39 to play in the third quarter. SJU began to chip away from here. The Hawks posted a 15-6 run to close the third quarter and take a 43-40 advantage into the final quarter break.
Richmond fell behind by seven, 47-40, before Hubbard stopped the bleeding with a three ball from the left wing. The two sides traded baskets for several minutes but a jumper from Chelsea Woods over the outstretch hand of Murphree with 3:24 left made it a nine-point SJU lead. The Richmond offense went cold from the floor in the final minutes and the Hawks built a 13-point lead before Parson settled things with a lay-in before time expired. The Hawks, however, got the victory, 64-53.
The Richmond Spiders will return to the court on Saturday afternoon at UMass. The 2 p.m. tip will be the last game for the Spiders until Jan. 24 when they return to the Robins Center to welcome cross-town rival VCU on the NBC Sports Network. The Spiders are already 1-0 in games featured on national television this season and knocked off VCU twice last season.
