Chiulli's Two Wins Lead Spiders At JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Richmond Swimming & Diving team faced James Madison in the first dual meet of 2016, falling to the Dukes, 175-121. The Spiders won five events, including two by junior Irina Chiulli, who placed first in both the 1m and 3m diving programs.
"I think that as a group we have have reached a whole new level of competitive maturity, which is really exciting to see,” Head Diving Coach Sean Letsinger said. “We learned some valuable lessons today that we will take with us as we continue striving to improve. I am looking forward to testing our progress against Fordham and LaSalle next week!"
Chiulli led all divers in the 1m with a 279.65 and then again in the 3m with a score of 312.25. Teammate Laura Rokop took third in both programs with a 263.75 in the 1m and a 248.55 in the 3m, while Mikaela Gekas-Robinson rounded out the top five in both with a 202.65 in the 1m and a 228.45 in the 3m.
Senior Kelley Yang had the fasted time in the 100 butterfly at 57.12, with teammates Hannah Matheson (59.19) and Natalie Dowzicky (59.45) also scoring in the event. The Spiders swam unopposed in the 200 individual medley with Annie Lane winning the event in 2:10.43.
In the 200 freestyle, the Spiders again competed unopposed with the relay team of Morgan Soulia, Matheson, Dowzicky, and Yang taking the top spot with a time of 1:39.62. The 400 medley relay team (Maggie Pope, Lane, Yang and Soulia) finished just behind the Dukes at 3:50.40.
The Spiders will return to the pool on Saturday, January 23 to compete against Atlantic 10 foes La Salle and Fordham in Philadelphia.
