UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (9-11, 2-5 A-10) battled Duquesne (18-2, 6-1 A-10) early on in Thursday nights contest at the Robins Center but in the end the Dukes were able to pull away for the 65-44 victory.
The Spiders struggled from the floor, shooting just over 30 percent without making a three-point try. Hubbard, after a poor scoring night at VCU on Monday found her stroke and scored a team-high 14 with Dazia Hall contributing a career-best nine points. Karleigh Wike grabbed 10 more rebounds and Salita Greene added nine. Eight Spiders overall found their way into the scoring column.
Hubbard's 14 points give her 1,121 in her career and cements her in the 15th spot in program history and in pursuit of Jennifer Meade who rest in 14th with 1,177 points. The junior is having a career season, averaging just shy of 16 points per game.
Richmond falls to 0-3 at home in conference play and will head back on the road for a pair of long trips to St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis before returning for four in-a-row at home as the season begins to wind down.
Duquesne was first on the board on the third possession of the game with a jumper in the lane from Szamosi, who went on to score the first four points of the game for the Dukes. Karleigh Wike made a free throw to get Richmond on the board and Hubbard followed with four-straight to make it a one-point game. Duquesne then scored eight-straight to take a 12-5 lead. The Spiders managed just three more points in the first to close it out trailing 16-8.
Salita Greene stepped into an 18-footer to start the scoring in the second quarter but the Dukes answered with a three ball to extend its lead to nine. Trailing by 11, Richmond locked down on defense for a few possessions before a Hubbard lay-in cut it back to nine and eventually seven with the help of a Wike jumper.
Duquesne reclaimed its 11-point advantage with 4:03 left and it stayed that way until the 1:37 mark when Alicia Hudalla converted inside. Micaela Parson came up with a steal and lay-up in transition on the next defensive possession to get it back down to seven but the Dukes created the lance chance of the half and finished it to hold a 29-20 lead at the break.
Richmond quickly cut the lead to eight in the early parts of the third quarter after a hustle play from Parson led to a steal and jumper from Hubbard. That would be as close as the Spiders would come in this one as Duquesne started to build its lead. The deficit reached 16 before Coach Shafer called for time with 3:29 to play in the quarter and it grew to 20 by the time the buzzer sounded.
The Spiders began the fourth quarter on a quick 4-0 run but a deep three from Omogrosso erased the effort. The squads traded baskets the rest of the way as the Dukes closed out their 18th victory of the season.
The Spiders will be back on the road this weekend when it travels to St. Bonaventure for a tilt with the Bonnies on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on the American Sprots Network. The game will be the first half of a double header with the Richmond men who will play at SBU at 3 p.m.
