BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Jacob Dunbar of the University of Richmond men's tennis team continued to put his name along side some of the best in the country this past week, posting yet another historic tournament performance at the ITA/USTA Regional Finals.
Dunbar became the first Spider in program history to reach the tournament finals, winning five straight singles matches to reach the finals, including knocking off two of the tournament's top five seeds along the way.
“Jacob's performance was outstanding and really shows that he can play among some of the best in the country,” Head Coach Ben Johnson said. “It's exciting to see the success he has had this fall and we're all looking forward to a great spring season for our program.”
Dunbar's weekend started off with back-to-back straight set wins over Matthew Lee of Navy (6-0, 6-0) and Marc Collado of Penn State (6-1, 6-1). In the round of 16, Dunbar battled his way to a three-set victory over Old Dominon's Javier Maestre.
The victory set up a quarterfinal matchup against the tournament's top-seeded player Constant Bassetiere of Penn State. Dunbar went to work and picked up a 6-3, 7-5 upset win to set up a semifinal date with Alex Ribeiro from the host school, Virginia Tech. Once again, Dunbar made quick work, blowing past Ribeiro in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Dunbar stepped into the singles championship less than 30 minutes after winning the doubles title with teammate Alex Felisa and fell to UVA's JC Aragone, the tournament's second-seeded player.
In addition to Dunbar's success, teammates Caleb Troy, Jonathan Quenard and Felisa all picked up victories in the opening round.
