What's New At The Robins Center

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - After a 2015-16 season where average attendance for Spider Men's Basketball was the highest since the Dick Tarrant era, the University of Richmond Athletics Department is excited to announce several new fun initiatives to go along with some of the popular traditions at men's basketball games at the Robins Center for the 2016-17 season. The fun begins at the Robins Center Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m. vs. VMI. Here are just some of the highlights for the 2016-17 basketball season at the Robins Center:
- See President Crutcher perform the National Anthem! - Our University of Richmond President and world-renowned cellist, Dr. Ronald Crutcher, along with our student symphony, will perform the national anthem on opening night Friday, November 11 vs. VMI at 7 p.m.
- RED OUT T-Shirts! - The Athletic Department has designed a new “Red Out T-Shirt” for fans to wear for designated Red Out games this year (Friday November 11 vs VMI, Saturday December 3 vs. Wake Forest and February 4 vs George Washington). Season ticket holders and the first 1,000 students at the home opener will receive their official 2016-17 Red Out T-Shirt free. All other fans may purchase their official red out t-shirts at the Robins Center Ticket Office, University Bookstore, online at RichmondSpiders.com, and at the Robins Center during home basketball games. A special discounted rate is available when purchasing with your tickets to the one of the three designated Red Out games.
- Freshmen Hometown Celebration - Come on out to celebrate with and welcome the local communities of our three new freshman student-athletes, Grant Golden, De'Monte Buckingham, and Nick Sherod. The athletic department has invited friends, families and the local communities of our three freshman for designated games on Sunday, November 20 vs. Robert Morris for Grant Golden, Saturday, December 10 vs. UMBC for De'Monte Buckingham and Saturday, December 17 vs. Texas Tech for Nick Sherod. - Basketball and Brews - After a successful debut at the men's basketball game vs. Northern Iowa last year, “Basketball and Brews” is back before the Saturday, December 10th game vs. UMBC and before the Saturday, January 28th game vs. Duquesne. Located in Millhiser Gym, local breweries will be out in full force sampling their favorite beers so you can taste some of the best micro beers in town prior to the game. - Harry Potter Night - After last season's successful Star Wars night, we will be celebrating another blockbuster movie this year on Sunday, November 20, with the Harry Potter spin-off, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” See some of your favorite Harry Potter characters in the Robins Center and many other surprises as the Spiders pay tribute to Harry Potter.
- Recyclemania - The Davidson game on February 21st is “Recyclemania” night. Join the Spiders and various on-campus and off-campus groups as we do our best at saving Planet Earth by attempting to have “zero waste” that evening.
- Heritage Nights - On Saturday, January 28 vs. Duquesne join us in celebrating Irish Heritage Night. Richmond has always had a strong population of proud Irish citizens. The Spider basketball team also spent a week in the Emerald Isle this summer. Stop by the Robins Center to see the Spiders celebrate Irish heritage with Celtic dancing, plenty of green and hopefully the Spiders will have the luck of the Irish that evening vs. Duquesne. - Dream Big, Presented by Park Sterling Bank! - For the first time ever, local elementary schools will be making a field trip to the Robins Center for a men's basketball game on Tuesday, November 22 vs. Hampton at NOON. A number of local schools and thousands of students will come to the Robins Center before Thanksgiving break to let off some major steam. This game will be loud and proud!
- Kwesi sings the National Anthem –Spider basketball student-athlete Kwesi Abakah will be singing the National Anthem December 3 vs. Wake Forest. Abakah was recently featured in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and displayed his singing talents all throughout Europe this summer.
- Halftime Acts - Enjoy our different national acts perform at halftime. This year's lineup includes Christian and Scooby (November 11 vs VMI), the Russian Bar Trio (December 3 vs. Wake Forest), The Chicago Boys Acrobatic Team (December 10 vs. UMBC), and Josh the Juggler (February 17 vs. VCU) to name a few!
- Concessions - University Concessions continues to broaden its menu with healthier options. This year University Concessions, for the first time, will offer sushi to fans! Fans will also find Gold Peak Tea and GroundUp coffee.
- First Responder Nights and Bruce's Brigade - All Richmond-area First Responders are invited to join us for on November 11 vs. VMI, December 10 vs. UMBC, and January 28 vs. Duquesne. Contact Jennifer Phillips at 804.287.6314 to learn more about how you can bring your family out to participate. Additionally, Richmond alumnus andHall of Famer, and current Washington Redskins President Bruce Allen has partnered with the athletics department to send children of Richmond-area First Responders to several of the Spiders' sports camps and to join the Spiderlings Kids Club, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. Spiderlings Kid's Club members can attend multiple basketball games for free and participate in many other exciting activities.
- Traditions - As always, Spider Basketball will have its popular traditions during the season including the $1 concession nights (December 17 vs. Texas Tech and March 4 vs. Saint Louis), the Mascot Basketball Game (January 22 vs. George Mason), the Virginia529 Diaper Derby (January 28 vs. Duquesne), Richmond's Got Talent competitions, Spider Athletics' Hall of Fame Recognition (February 4 vs. George Washington), Student-Athlete Academic Night Tuesday (February 21 vs. Davidson) and Fan Appreciation and Senior Day (March 4 vs. St. Louis)
- Info/Features - Just like in football season, prior to each game all fans with tickets will receive an email with stats and features about the upcoming game. Single-game ticket holders will be provided information about parking, campus shuttles and more to make their experience as enjoyable as possible for each basketball game.
- New Radio Station – Like football, men's basketball broadcasts are moving up the FM dial to 107.3 BBT. On the other side of the dial, you can continue to listen in on ESPN 950 AM. Tune in before, during, and after the game as Voice of the Spiders Bob Black and analyst Greg Beckwith bring you complete coverage of the Spiders!
