BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore region has long been known as one of, if not the biggest, hot beds for lacrosse.
On Saturday, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse made an impression on the region battling to a 7-5 win at UMBC to move to 2-0 for the second consecutive season.
Senior Alex Hatem and freshman Teddy Hatfield each scored two goals apiece to lead the offensive attack, while juniors Dan Ginestro (goal and assist) and J.P. Forester (two assists) each had two points each as well.
Junior Benny Pugh had eight saves on the afternoon, while classmate Mitch Goldberg extended his point streak to 25 consecutive games with his sixth goal of the year.
The Retrievers struck first, but Richmond answered quickly. Hatfield and Hatem both scored in the final two minutes of the first period to give the Spiders a 2-1 advantage.
Goldberg's goal less than three minutes into the second period pushed the lead to 3-1 and Peter Moran capped off the Spiders' four unanswered goals with one of his own, just nine seconds after Goldberg found the back of the net.
UMBC scored two goals in the final three minutes of the first half to get within one, 4-3, at the break.
Hatfield and Hatem would once again spark the Spider offense in the second half. Hatfield scored 30 seconds into the half and Hatem followed six minutes later to give Richmond a 6-3 advantage.
Ginestro found the back of the net with under three minutes to play in the period to round out the scoring for Richmond and gain a 7-3 lead.
UMBC would add just two more goals the rest of the way as the Spider defense locked down, allowing just six shots in the second half. Richmond dominated the ground ball battle, 34-16.
Richmond opens its 2016 home slate on Tuesday, February 23 when it hosts Mount St. Mary's. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
