Spiders Move To 3-0 For First Time With 9-6 Win Over Mt. St. Mary's

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Eight different players found the back of the net for the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team in the Spiders' 9-6 home-opening victory over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
The win moves Richmond to 3-0 for the first time in the program's three-year history.
Junior Dan Ginestro led the offensive attack with two goals and two assists, while classmate Benny Pugh was a stalwart in the net with 13 saves on the afternoon. Six different other player scored a goal apiece, including Mitch Goldberg, who tallied a point for the 26th consecutive game.
Richmond started its home season with a bang with Austin Cates scoring just 16 seconds in off an assist from Brendan Hynes to grab a 1-0 advantage. The Mount responded four minutes later with a goal of their own to tie it up at 1-1.
That's when the Spiders turned on the offensive jets, scoring five straight goals from five different players, capped off by Alex Hatem from freshman Ryan Lee to give Richmond a 6-1 lead with 4:05 to play in the half.
The Mount scored three more goals in the half to give the Spiders a 6-4 lead at the break.
Mount St. Mary's kept momentum on their side in the second half, scoring twice in the first six minutes to tie things up at 6-6.
Ginestro stuck with 4:31 to play in the third period with his second goal of the game off a beautiful drive to give the Spiders a 7-6 lead heading into the final period.
Richmond's scoring machine, Goldberg, found the back of the net three minutes into the fourth period and Teddy Hatfield put the nail in The Mount's coffin with under three minutes to play. Ginestro assisted on both of the Spiders' final two goals.
The Spiders return home on Saturday afternoon when they host perennial NCAA tournament contender Marquette. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 12 p.m.
