UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind stellar performances on the mound, the University of Richmond baseball team defeated Saint Joseph's, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 action.

The Spiders opened the game hot as senior Zach Grossfeld struck out the side in the top half of the first. In the bottom, Tyler Beckwith led off with a single and scored the first run of the game off a Michael Morman double.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jansen Fraser gave Richmond a 2-0 lead when the senior delivered a single to left to drive in Doug Kraeger. Morman's RBI single in the fifth extended the Spiders' lead to 3-0 as Beckwith crossed the plate.

The Hawks got on the board in the sixth as the plated a pair of runs, cutting Richmond's lead to one, 3-2.

Richmond answered in the seventh, as Beckwith led off the inning with a double to right center. The senior scored when Kraeger singled through the left side, putting the Spiders ahead, 4-2.

Saint Joseph's threatened in the eighth with runners in scoring position, but Caleb Ward struck out the Hawks' Charlie Concannon to end the inning and preserve Richmond's lead.

Grossfeld matched a career-best five strikeouts in his 5.2 innings of work. The left-hander scattered six hits and only allowed one walk. Freshman Layne Looney tossed two innings of relief, allowing just one hit, while Ward earned his second save of the year after tossing 1.1 innings for the Spiders.

Richmond will conclude the series with Saint Joseph's tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. and will be available on the A10 Network.
