UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – With the focus being on the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which is now less than a month away, the University of Richmond women's tennis team appears to be hitting its stride.
After sweeping in-state foe Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon, the Spiders have now won four of their past five matches.
“It was great to put a healthy team on the court today. I liked what I saw from the girls and how they play so offense-minded today,” Head Coach Mark Wesselink said. “I think we're finally getting on top of our injuries and I like the way we're coming together at the most crucial time of year.”
Richmond started strong with a sweep in the doubles, highlighted by the top doubles duo of Brittany Boys and Katya Salas, who dominated NSU's duo Dajana Cvjetkovic and Ana Popovic, 6-1.
Kelsey Williams quickly pushed the Spiders' lead to 2-0 with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win over Popovic at the fifth singles spot. Salas followed with a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory of her own at the sixth position.
Gaby Rosales secured the match victory for Richmond with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the #2 singles spot.
Boys, Ana Ramirez and Anna Abadias Morales all posted straight set singles victories of their own to complete the sweep.
The Spiders will be back in action on Wednesday, March 30 when they host Montana State. First serve on the Westhampton Tennis Courts is set for 2:30 p.m.
