UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Winning can be a contagious thing. It spreads confidence throughout a group and that has been evident with the University of Richmond women's tennis team.
That confidence came through on Sunday as the Spiders battled their way to a thrilling 4-3 win over Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne for their eighth win in the past 10 matches.
“I'm pleased with the toughness we displayed today. Even if we didn't play our best tennis today, we battled through and came away with the win, which at this time of year, is the most critical part,” Head Coach Mark Wesselink said.
Juniors Brittany Boys and Kelsey Williams, along with senior Katya Salas and freshman Ana Ramirez came up with singles victories to help the Spiders (12-7) pick up the needed points to come away with the win.
Duquesne started out by flexing its muscles on the doubles courts, winning at the top two spots to take a quick 1-0 lead.
Williams evened things up with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win at the #5 singles spot, but the Dukes responded with wins at the top two spots in the singles lineup to take a 3-1 lead.
Richmond turned it on with a win from Salas at #6, followed closely behind by Ramirez at #4 with a 7-5, 6-1 win to even things up at 3-3.
Boys played hero on Sunday, battling back to take a three-set thriller, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3 to earn the decisive point for the Spiders.
Richmond returns home for its final home contest of the season on Monday afternoon when they host in-state rival JMU. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be seen on SpiderTV.
