UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Conference matches bring out the best in student-athletes. It's more intense, there's more emotion, it's the best of the best.
The University of Richmond women's tennis team was coming off back-to-back intense conference matches on Monday and the Spiders battled their way against a tough JMU team, but ultimately fell to the Dukes, 4-1, on a blustery afternoon on campus.
“I thought today would be a tough match, not only because of the quality of the opponent, but we were coming off some emotional conference matches and the conditions weren't ideal with the wind, but I'm proud of the battle the team showed,” Head Coach Mark Wesselink said. “I thought Kelsey and Anna played really well today and I'm excited about the mindset of the team heading towards A-10s.”
The Dukes jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking the doubles point and winning in straight sets at the sixth spot in the singles lineup.
Junior Kelsey Williams got the Spiders on the board with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 win over JMU's Bella Heidenreich.
Anna Abadias Morales and Ana Ramirez were in position to pick up singles victories themselves, but the Dukes were able to clinch two more singles matches before they could finish to secure the 4-1 victory.
