UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Even Mother Nature couldn't cool down the University of Richmond men's tennis team on Saturday.
After over 24 hours of gloomy, rainy weather, the skies cleared and the Spiders rolled to their fifth straight win, sweeping Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's, 7-0.
Five of the six singles matches were straight set victories for the Spiders, while Richmond convincingly won the doubles point early in the match for a complete sweep of the Hawks.
“I was happy with the way we came out and played with energy in every match today,” Head Coach Ben Johnson said. “The weather delay definitely could've affected us, but our guys were focused when they took the courts and did what they needed to do to get the win.”
The Spiders locked in from the start, dominating doubles action with quick victories at the top spot from Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa, followed by James Aronson and Canyon Teague clinching the point for Richmond at the third spot in the lineup.
In singles action, Dunbar continued his strong play, blowing past SJU's Andres Urrea, 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot to push the Spiders lead to 2-0. Junior Alex Hahn followed close behind with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth spot to bring Richmond within a point of clinching the match.
That clinching point came when Aronson finished off SJU's Andre Fick, 6-2, 6-2 to seal the win for Richmond.
Teague, Felisa and Caleb Troy all added singles victories of their own to round out the scoring for the Spiders.
Richmond returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they host the Hoyas of Georgetown University. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
