Spiders Fall To Coppin State, 6-5, In Extras

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For the fourth time in three weeks, the University of Richmond baseball team gave its fans free baseball. This time, the Spiders fell to Coppin State, 6-5, in 10 innings in their regular season home finale.
The Spiders (26-21), who are in the midst of a 12-game in 15 days stretch to close out the regular season, scored in four of the five innings, but couldn't muster any runs against the Eagles (12-36) bullpen in the loss.
Sophomore Daniel Brumbaugh led the offense with three hits on the afternoon, while senior Doug Kraeger added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Redshirt freshman D.J. Lee also had two hits for the Spiders.
“I'm disappointed by today. We wanted to close out the regular season home slate with a strong effort today and that's not what happened. We didn't come out ready to play and it showed,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “We need to turn the page quickly for a critical series this weekend against George Washington.”
Richmond continued the offensive momentum from last night's 17-5 win at JMU with back-to-back RBI doubles from Kraeger and Brumbaugh to grab a 2-0 advantage.
Coppin State answered right back with two runs in the top half of the second on a home run by John O'Dwyer to even the score at 2-2.
Brumbaugh would strike again in the home half of the third, dropping a single into right field to score Kyle Adams and give Richmond a 3-2 lead.
Senior Jansen Fraser pushed the Spiders lead to 4-2 with a long home run to left in the bottom of the fourth.
The Eagles would respond once again in the top of the fifth with a three homerun of their own to take their first lead of the day at 5-4.
Kraeger wouldn't let the lead last long, launching a long homerun to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up at 5-5.
The bullpens would take over from there, holding the offenses scoreless with freshman Peter Bovenzi tossing three hitless innings to keep CSU off the board.
Richmond would threaten in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but the Eagles pitched out of the jam to keep the game tied at 5-5.
As the game headed to extras, CSU waited little time scratching out a run, manufacturing the game-winner with a leadoff walk and a stolen base and an eventual RBI single by Bryant Miranda to grab the 6-5 lead.
Richmond couldn't muster a run in the bottom of the 10th as it dropped its home season finale.
The Spiders return to action this weekend in a crucial three-game series against Alantic 10 foe George Washington. The first game is set for Friday at 3 p.m. in Arlington, Va.
