Spiders Fall In Extras At George Washington, 7-6
05/14/2016 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Va. – For the second time in as many games and the fifth time in the past three weeks, the University of Richmond baseball team played extra innings and for the second straight game, the Spiders fell in a hard-fought contest, dropping a tough 7-6 decision in 10 innings to George Washington in the first game of a critical Atlantic 10 series for both teams.
Seniors Michael Morman and Tyler Beckwith led the Spiders' (26-22, 11-11 A-10) offense with three hits apiece with Morman also driving in two runs on the afternoon.
Sophomore Keenan Bartlett tossed a career-best eight innings of work, scattering 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out two and not walking a batter.
"These conference games are going to be a battle every time out, especially when we're both playing for a spot in the postseason. We have to dig deep and find a way to focus on winning the next two," Head Coach Tracy Woodson said.
It didn't take long for the Spiders to get settled in as Kyle Adams hit a solo shot over the right field wall to put Richmond on the board, 1-0.
The Spiders added three more runs in the second, taking a commanding 4-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Beckwith and Jansen Fraser got things started in the inning before Kyle Schmidt's bunt moved the runners over. Beckwith slid across home off Lee's bunt before Morman delivered a two-run double down the right field line to cap off the inning.
George Washington (21-28, 10-9 A-10) broke through in the bottom half of the second with an RBI single.
Richmond looked for some insurance runs with the bases loaded in the fifth. Schmidt came up with a clutch two-out, two-run single to drive in Kurtis Brown and Daniel Brumbaugh and extend the Spiders' lead, 6-1.
The Colonials sparked a rally in the fifth after a pair of leadoff singles to score three runs and get within two, 6-4. With a leadoff double in the sixth, GW cut the Spiders' lead to one, 6-5.
GW continued to flirt with Richmond's lead. The Colonials looked to push across the tying run in the bottom of the eighth, but the runner was mowed down on a nice play from Schmidt to Morman at third.
GW continued to be persistent and with a two-out single up the middle, they pushed the tying run across the plate.
The Spiders loaded the bases in the tenth as they looked to regain their lead, but the runners were left on.
In the bottom half of the inning, Bobby Campbell hit a walk-off home run for a 7-6 win in game one.
Richmond and George Washington will continue the series tomorrow morning at 11:30.
