Spiders Fall to George Washington, 8-4, in A10 Finale

ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Richmond fell to George Washington, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon in the Spiders' final Atlantic 10 contest of the 2016 season. Jansen Fraser, Brandon Johnson and D.J. Lee led the Spiders offensively, each having two hits on the day.
George Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. However, their lead would be short-lived as Richmond responded in the second tying the game behind a double from Fraser.
The Spiders capitalized on a leadoff walk to Kyle Adams and a standup double from Michael Morman in the third as they took the lead. Adams crossed the dish to give Richmond the 2-1 advantage on an RBI groundout. The Spiders continued battle in the inning as they looked to extend their lead, but the GW reliever Brody Renner pitched out of the jam holding Richmond to one run.
Richmond looked to tack on runs in the fourth behind hits from Johnson and Lee, but an inning ending double play kept the game at 2-1.
The Colonials were able to push across the tying run in the fifth when Joey Bartosic scored on an RBI single.
The tied game wouldn't last long as once again Richmond answered when Fraser blasted his seventh long ball of the season, putting the Spiders back on top, 3-2. Richmond added one more insurance run in the inning behind a sacrifice fly from Adams that plated Zach Kurtz, for a 4-2 lead.
George Washington wouldn't go quietly. The Colonials cut Richmond's lead to one in the seventh, 4-3, off back-to-back doubles. GW rallied late, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 8-4 lead, whcih they would hold on to for the win.
Richmond will return to the diamond to face defending national champion, Virginia, in Charlottesville on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
