UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Her name is etched in the records, she is one of the most decorated players in the University of Richmond field hockey history, but Rebecca Barry was not done there as she is set to make her first international cap Saturday for Ireland's national team.
Barry, a 2015 graduate, is only the third Richmond alum to ever earn an international cap. She joins Holly Cram, a 2005 graduate, who had over 140 international caps for Scotland, and Jess Hollis, class of 2014, who played for Bermuda.
The Limerick, Ireland native got called up to the senior national team earlier this week as they prepare for the Four Nations Tournament. Barry is set to make her debut against Scotland on Saturday, who is ranked seventeenth in the world before taking on Belgium (12) on Sunday, and Chile (22) next week.
Prior to the call-up, Barry was playing with Ireland's Ulster Elks. The team was recently promoted after competing in Europe for the first time in history. Barry was a critical part of the Elks achieving promotion.
The three-time All-American scored three goals for the Elks throughout the tournament. Her first came in game one against the host, Slavia Prague. In the final game, which would secure not only gold but promotion for the team, Barry found the back of the cage in the fifth minute, and then put the Elks up 3-0 at the half grabbing her second of the game off a fast counter.
