UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Gina Lucido might want to save her halftime speech from Friday afternoon.
Lucido's Richmond Field Hockey squad used a dominating second half performance to spark the Spiders to a 3-1 victory over Davidson in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Senior Emma Johansson scored her 25th career goal as a Spider and freshman Abby Lyons assisted on two of Richmond's three goals on the afternoon to lead the offensive attack. Freshman Kaitlyn DaSilva and sophomore Thalia Williamson also found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
Richmond controlled tempo in the first half, sending a barrage of shots towards the Davidson cage, but couldn't get anything past the Wildcat keeper.
The Spiders earned five corners in the first stanza and constantly put pressure on the Davidson defense.
In the final minutes of the first half, Olivia Hubert took a diving shot off a corner, but it went just wide.
With under two minutes to play in the first half, DaSilva intercepted a pass and dished it to Kelly Quinn, who blasted a shot, but it was knocked away to keep the game scoreless at the break.
It wouldn't take the Spiders long in the second half as Lyons found Johannsen who ripped a shot into the back of the cage to grab a 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, Williamson dribbled through the Wildcat defense and found the back of the cage to extend Richmond's lead to 2-0.
The insurance goal came in the 55th minute when Lyons dished it to DaSilva, who rocketed a shot past the Wildcat keeper to push the advantage to 3-0.
Davidson would get a goal back in the 61st minute, but the Spider defense would hold strong to help secure the 3-1 win.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday when they host Lock Haven in an Atlantic 10 contest. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 12 p.m.
