LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell, 5-1, to No. 12 Louisville on Sunday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt registered five saves in the game, tying her season best, which she set in the season opener at American.
"We couldn't match the attacking threat and ball movement of our opponent today," said head coach Gina Lucido. "The team competed relentlessly and showed each match has value in growth beyond the win/loss outcome. Amanda Hoyt was a huge performer in goal and our defensive unit showed major improvement in our defensive third."
Louisville (4-0) struck first as Lotta Kahlert dribbled into the circle and found the back of the cage in the tenth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later Hannah Thomson sped down the line looking to put the Spiders (2-2) on the board, but the Cardinals defense trailed her as their back line cleared the ball stopping her chance. Thomson wouldn't back down and capitalized on a breakaway sneaking past the keeper for her first goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute.
Louisville looked for opportunities off penalty corners, but the Richmond defense stood strong denying any chance. However, the Cards' Minout Mink found an opening to give Louisville a 2-1 advantage as time expired in the first half.
Less than a minute into the second half, Kaitlyn DaSilva fired off a shot looking to tie the game back up, but UofL's keeper was there turning away the chance. Louisville tacked on a goal to take a 3-1 lead, when Kahlert scored her second of the season.
Richmond continued to battle as Thomson blasted off another shot, but Louisville's keeper once again was on her mark. The Cards found the back of the cage again in the 47th minute to extend their lead, 4-1.
With six minutes left to play, Louisville extended its lead 5-1 behind Stephanie Byrne's second of the game.
After two weeks on the road, the Spiders will host in-state rival Old Dominion in the home opener on September 9. The game is set for 3:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
