Spiders Drop 2-1 Heartbreaker at UMass
10/27/2017 | Field Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – The Spider Hockey team closed out the regular season on Friday afternoon, going down to the wire with Atlantic 10 rival, UMass. However, Richmond dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1, after a late Minutewomen goal.
UMass got things started with a penalty stroke from Melanie Kreusch to give the Minutewomen the early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Abby Lyons fired off a shot, but UMass keeper Emily Hazard turned away the chance for Richmond to even the score. Senior Katrina Balatgek and freshman Cadera Smith looked to find the back of the cage, but neither could find an opening.
Five minutes into the second half, the Spiders once again looked to even the score, but senior Kasey Gilbride's shot off the corner missed wide. The Spiders notched the equalizer with ten minutes remaining when Gilbride connected with Balatgek for her fifth goal of the season.
With two minutes remaining UMass' Sarah Hawkshaw found the back of the cage on a corner gave the Minutewomen a 2-1 advantage. The Spiders continued to attack looking for another opportunity to tie the game, but unfortunately time expired and UMass preserved a 2-1 win.
Richmond clinched its 17th consecutive tournament berth over the weekend and will return to Amherst next week for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Official seeding and match-ups will be determined at the conclusion of tomorrow's conference games.
