10/08/2017 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the seventh time this season, the Spider Hockey team squared off with a top-25 opponent on Sunday when they visited #15 Wake Forest. The Spiders battled with senior Katrina Balatgek notching two goals, but dropped the Sunday contest, 6-2.
Wake Forest was able to get on the board first on a deflection off a penalty corner 12 minutes into the game. The Demon Deacons added another goal to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
One minute into the second half, WF tacked on another goal to go up 3-0. The Spiders continued to battle looking for an opportunity to get on the board. Balatgek capitalized on an opportunity as she notched her first goal of the season thanks to a short cross from sophomore Abby Lyons, putting the Spiders within two, 3-1.
The Demon Deacons added on to their lead with a pair of goals to take a 5-1 lead. It didn't take long for Richmond to respond as 15 seconds later, Balatgek registered her second goal of the game to cut the Deacs lead to three, 5-2.
With five minutes left, WF added one more goal that would make the final score, 6-2.
The Spiders return to Atlantic 10 action on Friday, October 13 at Lock Haven. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
