Nine Spiders Light Up the Scoreboard in Loss to Florida, 87-80

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (3-2) matched up with Florida (2-2) on Tuesday afternoon in the first game of the Savannah Invitational and battled to the bitter end, overcoming multiple double-digit deficits but ultimately went down swinging, 87-80.
The Spiders were led by 18 points from Alex Parson who was followed closely behind by big sister Micaela who dropped in 17. Nine different Spiders etched their names in the box score. Kailyn Fee, Amy Duggan, Dee Hatcher and Alicia Hudalla all scored eight points. Duggan also pulled down eight rebounds. Jaide Hinds-Clarke scored six points and hauled in seven boards in just 12 minutes of action.
To say that the first half of this game was a track meet would be an understatement. In the first quarter both sides traded makes back and forth, combining for 20 points in the first 3:50 of the game. Florida pushed ahead by as many as nine at the 2:09 mark but Murphree canned a triple with 1:28 to go to make it a six-point game going into the second quarter.
The Gators opened up their largest lead of the game, 31-20, by the 8:23 mark in the second quarter but the Spiders and their new high-octane offense are never going to be out of games this season. Just over a minute later the lead was down to just six after a long ball from Alicia Hudalla. Florida bounced back and built another double-digit advantage but from that point Richmond closed on a 12-5 run take a three-point deficit into the locker room.
Nine different Spiders put points on the board in the first half, led by two players off the bench – Jaide Hinds-Clarke and Dee Hatcher who each put in six. The Spiders shot 50 percent from the floor and even out-rebounded the taller Gators, 19-17.
Florida led by as many as nine, 50-41, with 6:19 to play in the third and by seven, 56-49, at the 3:54 mark but the Richmond offense came to life when Alex buried a triple to make it a four-point game at 3:33. Micaela took over, scoring eight of the next 11 Richmond points to lead a 14-6 run that resulted in the Spiders leading the Gators, 63-62, as we entered the fourth.
The Richmond offense began the fourth quarter 1-10 from the floor and 0-5 from long range as the Gators built a 77-65 advantage by the 5:54 mark. Richmond did its part to stay in the game but was never able to overcome the slow start to the quarter.
There will be no rest for the Spiders who will take the court again tomorrow (Nov. 22) at 2 p.m. opposite hometown team Savannah State.
