Spiders Drop Road Opener at Wake Forest
12/02/2017 | Men's Basketball
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Redshirt freshman Grant Golden scored a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Spiders to overcome an on-target Wake Forest team Saturday.Â
The Demon Deacons shot better than 54 percent from the field for the game and stretched their 11-point halftime lead to more than 20 with an 11-0 run to open the second half, cruising to an 82-53 victory. After the game, Coach Chris Mooney said the Spiders "didn't play well enough to challenge [Wake Forest]," adding that the Demon Deacons "are at their best when they are playing very freely and that was the case today."
Golden topped the 15-point mark for the fourth time in his last six games and added seven rebounds for Richmond. Also in double figures for the Spiders was sophomore Nick Sherod, who finished with 12 points, hitting on four three-pointers for the second straight game. Sherod's eight triples over the last two games are five more than he had in the first six games of the season combined. While Sherod was four-of-six from behind the arc, the rest of the Spiders combined for just two makes on 20 three-point attempts.Â
The third Spider to reach the 10-point mark was sophomore De'Monte Buckingham, who totaled 11 points and came within one rebound of securing his second career double-double, finishing the game with a season-high nine boards.Â
Wake Forest was the fourth NCAA Tournament team Richmond has faced in its eight games this season. The Spiders played against Jacksonville State, Cincinnati, and Vermont earlier this year.Â
Richmond will return to action Wednesday in Norfolk, Va. with a game against Old Dominion of Conference USA. Tip time is scheduled for 7 PM.
