Lee, Spiders Battle Past UMBC, 10-5
02/18/2017 | Men's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Ryan Lee of the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team is a fairly quiet, mild mannered individual.
Put a lacrosse stick in his hand and it's game on.
Lee's hot hand led the 16th-ranked Spiders to a gutsy 10-5 win over a tough, feisty UMBC squad on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
The South Salem, N.Y. native posted his second straight hat trick, finishing with three goals and one assist to lead the Spiders offensive attack. Classmate Teddy Hatfield, the reigning National Player of the Week, added two goals and an assist on the day. Fellow sophomore Adrian Nash also had two goals and was the third Spider with a multi-goal game.
Defensively, Richmond locked down the Retrievers, holding its second straight opponent to five goals or less. Senior Benny Pugh was stellar in net once again, finishing with 10 saves, his second straight double-digit save performance. Classmate Brendan Hynes finished with a game high six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Dating back to last year, the Spiders have allowed just 5.6 goals per game in their past five games.
The defensive battle started early with neither team lighting the scoreboard for nearly the first seven minutes of the contest.
Lee broke that stretch when he took a feed from Dean Roseman and ripped off the first goal of the game with 8:45 to play in the first quarter.
Richmond didn't take long to extend that lead when 45 seconds later Hatfield found J.P. Forester for a 2-0 Spiders lead.
Roseman got his turn less than two minutes into the second quarter and Hatfield followed suit shortly after to quickly push the Spiders advantage to 4-0.
UMBC would finally get on the board with under seven minutes to play, but Lee and Nash would find the back of the net in the final four minutes of the half to send Richmond into halftime with a 6-1 cushion.
In the second half, Lee picked up where he left off, finishing off his second straight hat trick off an assist from Austin Cates to push the lead to 7-1.
That's when the Retrievers came alive, scoring four of the game's next five goals to make it 8-5 heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Richmond's defense would hold strong, silencing UMBC over the final minutes of the game, allowing Nash and Hatfield to score in the final two minutes of the game to seal the victory for the Spiders.
The Spiders are back in action on Tuesday when they hit the road for the first time this year against Mount St. Mary's. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
