Spiders Clip Flyers in Doubleheader Sweep
03/25/2017 | Baseball
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond baseball team likes to keep everyone on their toes. Saturday's Atlantic 10 doubleheader with Dayton was no different. The Spiders swept the Flyers to post a 2-1 record in conference play.
"Today's wins were huge for us, we really needed those," said head coach Tracy Woodson. "I was impressed with the way the team battled back after Dayton tied things up in the first game. They knew what they had to do and came out on top in extras. You could tell the momentum carried over to the second game. I'm proud of the way the guys played today and hope this carries over to next weekend."
Game One: Richmond 10, Dayton 5 – 10 innings
Behind a stellar performance from Daniel Brumbaugh on the hill and a tenth inning rally, the Spiders picked up a nail-biting 10-5 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. In his first career start on the mound, Brumbaugh tossed five no-hit innings and finished his six-inning outing allowing just two hits and one run. The right-hander did not allow a walk during his outing and struck out a career-best five.
In the win, Richmond tallied 18 hits, which is the most in a single game this season.
The Spiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth behind a Zach Kurtz double and an RJ Watters groundout. In the next frame, RBI doubles from Justin Cook and Kurtz added a pair of runs giving Richmond a 4-0 lead.
Dayton's Pat Meehan broke up Brumbaugh's no-hit bid in the sixth, and ultimately ended up crossing the plate to put the Flyers on the board.
Richmond responded when Cook crushed his first career home run in the seventh, giving the Spiders a four-run, 5-1, lead. In the home half, the Flyers' Brandon Smith cut Richmond's lead to three, 5-2, with his solo shot.
The Flyers wouldn't go quietly as they pushed across three in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Richmond looked to end the game in the ninth, but a double play ended the inning sending the game to extras.
With emotions high, the Spiders put up a four-spot in the tenth to secure the 10-5 victory. Jonathan de Marte's one-out double sparked the rally bringing home Vinny Capra and D.J. Lee. Cook, who finished the game a triple shy of the cycle, singled to bring in de Marte before Tim Miller and Kyle Adams capped off the scoring.
De Marte, who started the game at first, picked up his second win on the hill after his three innings of relief. The right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out three en route to the win.
Game Two: Richmond 11, Dayton 1
The Spiders kept the momentum in the second game, knocking off Dayton 11-1. Capra and Watters each
On the hill, Layne Looney registered his longest outing to date tossing a strong seven innings. The righty scattered eight hits, allowed just one run and struck out four.
Capra got things started in the first inning with a leadoff single and scored on a groundout and a couple Flyer miscues, but the Flyers answered back immediately, tying the game at 1-1.
However, the tie would be short-lived. Richmond capitalized on Dayton errors and singles from Watters and Capra helped plate three in the second to go up 4-1. In the next frame, Lee crossed the dish thanks to a de Marte RBI single up the middle to extend Richmond's lead to 5-1.
The Spiders continued to control the game putting up a five-spot in the sixth to go ahead 10-1. Lee had a bases clearing triple in the inning while Brumbaugh capped off the scoring with a single to center.
Richmond would add one more in the ninth behind a Kyle Schmidt's single. In his two innings of relief, Peter Bovenzi retired six Flyers to secure the victory.
On Deck:
The Spiders will be back in action until Friday, March 31 as they host UNC Asheville for a nonconference series at Pitt Field.
