UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team was riding a two-game win streak heading into Atlantic 10 Conference play, and made sure that streak continued.
The Spiders gained a 10-goal lead heading into halftime and didn't look back, as they went on to dominate Duquesne, 20-4, on Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
"We had a really great team win today,” head coach Allison Kwolek said after the game. “It was awesome to see everyone step on the field and contribute in big ways.”
The 20 goals scored are the most by a Spider squad since April 14, 2013, when Richmond took down St. Bonaventure, 22-8. The four goals scored by the Dukes are the least by a Richmond opponent since last season, when the Spiders started the year with a 16-2 win over Mercer.
“Our defense maintained a sense of urgency through the whole game, and it was great to have so many people put up points on offense," Kwolek added.
The 33 points for the Spiders are just one short of the program record, set in the 2013 matchup with the Bonnies.
Natalia Chaney led all scorers with five goals, a feat which she has accomplished three times this season, on her way to scoring 30 goals in the opening half of the year.
Sam Geiersbach scored twice for her eighth multi-goal game of the year, while Aly Fries, Katie Sciandra and Melissa Teel also found the back of the net two times in the game. Five other Spiders scored in the win, including newcomer Allie Geiger, who scored her first-career goal in the closing minutes.
Kathleen Berkery and Kim Egizi each tallied four assists, as the Spiders totaled 13 assisted scores to tie the program record set back in 2012 against Temple.
Megan Gianforte finished with five saves in goal for the Spiders, while Caroline Queally led in the draw circle, collecting seven draw control wins to lead the team. Overall, Richmond outshot the Dukes, 32-11, and held the lead in both ground balls (11-8) and draw controls (17-9).
The Spiders will now play three-straight contests on the road, starting with a Sunday afternoon matchup with LaSalle. First draw in Philadelphia is set for 12 p.m.
