Spiders Fall at #25 Old Dominion, 4-2
09/10/2017 | Field Hockey
NORFOLK, Va. – The Spider Hockey team continues to be challenged by some of the best teams in the country. Sunday was no different as Richmond squared off with its third ranked opponent this season in #25 Old Dominion.
Â
Despite a hard fought battle, the Spiders fell to the Monarchs, 4-2, as freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland scored both goals in the contest.
Â
Off a penalty corner, Beelaerts van Blokland took a shot that got past the keeper to give Richmond an early 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. ODU's Erin Huffman answered evening the score at 1-1.
Â
The Monarchs continued to extend its lead to 3-1, scoring two more goals in a span of three minutes.
Â
Senior Kasey Gilbride took a penalty shot in the 41st minute, as the Spiders looked to cut the deficit to one, but the ODU keeper stopped Gilbride's shot to keep the Monarchs' two-goal lead.
Â
With fifteen minutes remaining, ODU tacked on a goal to make it a 4-1 game. Beelaerts van Blokland fired off a shot off a corner again to knock in her second goal of the game and cut ODU's lead to two, 4-2.
Â
Richmond looked for opportunities to continue its rally, but the ODU defense stifled any chance.
Â
Junior keeper Felicitas Heinzel registered 10 saves in the game, just one save shy of her career-high. Â
Â
The Spiders will open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday, September 15 when crosstown rival VCU visits Crenshaw Field. The game is set for 5:00 p.m. and will be available on the A-10 Network. Â
