Spiders Fall to #5 Virginia Sunday Afternoon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Spider Field Hockey team continued its challenging 2017 slate on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville squaring off with the nationally-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. This was the fourth time thus far Richmond has faced a top-25 opponent. Â
Number five-ranked Virginia came out of the gates hot, firing off three shots in the under the first minute, but a combined effort from goalkeeper Felicitas Heinzel and defender Amanda DaSilva, each chance was halted. The Cavaliers broke through Richmond's back line in the 12th minute when Tara Vittese gave UVA a 1-0 lead.
Richmond looked for chances to even the score with six shots in a span of four minutes, but each opportunity was turned away. The Cavaliers extended their lead to take a 4-0 advantage at the half.Â
UVA grabbed a 5-0 lead at the start of the second half when Pien Dicke netted her second goal of the game. The Cavaliers added two more goals in the final minutes of the half to make it 7-0.Â
Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland led the Richmond attack with four shots while Heinzel notched a career-best 18 saves.Â
The Spiders return to A-10 play on Friday, September 22 at Saint Louis. That game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
