Spiders Pick Up 3-2 Victory at Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 Action
09/22/2017 | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Richmond field hockey team found themselves in a close game with Atlantic 10 foe, Saint Louis, Friday evening, as the Spiders notched a 3-2 win in the back-and-forth contest.
In the opening three minutes, Saint Louis registered three shots all of which were stopped by the Richmond defense.
Senior Kasey Gilbride looked to get things started for the Spiders, but SLU keeper turned away that opportunity, much like many others in the following minutes. Freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland connected with sophomore Abby Lyons who found an opening and put Richmond on the board, 1-0 in the 28th minute. This is the second-consecutive game Lyons has scored.
Four minutes into the second half, senior Megan Miller took the ball and scored from the far side to put Richmond ahead, 2-0 over the Billikens.
SLU cut the deficit to one, but the Spiders responded immediately. Off a penalty corner, Miller and Beelaerts van Blokland connected with sophomore Elise Zwicklbauer as she recorded her first goal of the season to make it a 3-1 advantage.
The Billikens continued to battle and scratched across a goal once again cutting Richmond's lead to one, 3-2. However, the Spiders would hold off SLU's attack and secure the conference victory.
The Spiders continue their road swing in the Gateway City as they square off with Kent State tomorrow afternoon in a neutral contest. That game is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
