09/23/2017 | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – It was another close contest in the Gateway City on Saturday, as the Spiders held off Kent State's late rally for a 3-2 victory.
Â
The Spiders got the attack started earlier with senior Hannah Thomson and freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland launching shots, but all were turned away. It was freshman Cadera Smith who broke through and got Richmond on the board, 1-0, as she notched her first career goal 11 minutes into the game.
Â
Junior Nealy Henderson fired off a shot, which was saved by they Kent State, but Henderson scored her first goal of the season after controlling the rebound of her shot. As time expired in the first half the Spiders were granted a corner and junior Olivia Hubert scored after a scuffle in the circle.
Â
Kent State's Madeline Osgarby put the Golden Flashes on the board in the second half. Â The Spiders continued to look for opportunities to extend their lead, but the Kent State defense held them off.
Â
Osgarby found the back of the cage for the second time of the game with less than two minutes remaining to cut Richmond's lead to one, 3-2, but the Spiders held on to preserve the win.
Â
The Spiders will return to Crenshaw Field on Friday, September 29 to host in-state rival #13 James Madison. That contest will begin at 5:00 p.m. and be available on Spider TV and the Atlantic 10 Network.
