Spiders Battle JMU, Notch Four Individual Victories

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Spider Swim & Dive team returned to action on Saturday afternoon with a visit to Harrisonburg to take on the JMU Dukes. Four individual wins highlighted the meet with a pair of divers setting new career marks.

Junior Morgan Soulia continued to shine in the 200 IM as she won the event in a season-best time of 2:07.21. Freshman Jordan Kohut picked up the win in the 50 back with a time of 26.47. Senior Annie Lane won the 50 breast stroke (32.18) while junior Lauren Wallace took the 50 fly (27.20), as the Spiders went on to sweep both events.

On the boards, senior Laura Rokop set a career mark in the 3-meter event with a score of 286.96 with freshman Natalie Hawley registering a new career best in the event at 190.58.

Junior Nicole Piercy placed second in the 500 free at 5:10.18 and picked up a third place finish in the 1,000 free in a time of 10:28.65, which is her fastest this season. Classmate Lauren Wallace registered a top-five finish in the 500 free (5:17.30) and was sixth in the 1,000 (11:00.75).

Behind Soulia in the 200IM was senior Hannah Verrette (2:11.46) and freshman Ellie Ronan (2:12.97) who logged top-five finishes. Sophomore Hannah Gouger and Soulia took second and third in the 100 fly at 59.27 and 59.53, respectively.

In addition to Kohut winning the 50 back, the Spiders took three of the top four spots with Gouger placing second (27.62) and Verrette touching the wall at 27.75. Senior Erin Barry picked up a top-three finish in the 100 breast stroke in a time of 1:09.26, while sophomore Lexie Gilbert (1:11.12) and senior Emily Landon (1:11.23) close behind.

Sophomore Virginia Marsh was the first Spider to touch the wall in the 50 free at 24.58. Marsh led Kohut (25.22), junior Brynn Robertson (26.23) and Landon (26.33) in the event. Marsh and freshman Mallory Shake registered top-five finishes in the 100 free with times of 54.32 and 55.62, respectively.

The Spiders took third through sixth place in the 100 back with Verrette (58.33) leading the way. Gouger (59.61), Ronan (1:01.21) and Kohut (1:01.75) rounded out the UR performance in the event.

In addition to career-best performances on the boards, Rokop led the way on the 1-meter board with a score of 244.21 with sophomore Sydney Weiskopf and Hawley finishing with scores of 228.38 and 196.79, respectively.

In the relay events, the Spiders logged a time of 1:46.09 in the 200 medley, and a 3:40.19 in the 400 free.

The Spiders return to the water next Saturday (January 20) as they head north to the Bronx, N.Y. for a tri-meet with Fordham and La Salle. Action begins at 1:00 pm and a live stream will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network.
