
Baseball Alum to Represent Team Israel in Olympic Qualifying

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Former Spider Jonathan de Marte, along with nine other professional baseball players, will acquire Israeli passports, making them dual American-Israeli citizens and will be eligible to represent Israel at the International level. Team Israel is preparing to compete in several European tournaments with a chance to be eligible for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. De Marte was part of the Spider baseball program from 2012-17 and earned his undergraduate degree in rhetoric and communications and a graduate degree in human resources management from the University of Richmond.
This season, de Marte competed with the Normal Cornbelters of the Frontier League before moving on to compete with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League. With the Revolution, de Marte appeared in five games, logging 5.0 innings, a 3.60 ERA and struck out five hitters. With the Cornbelters, he made 42 relief appearances, logging 53.1 innings. He earned a 2.86 ERA, earning three wins and seven saves during the season. He was second on the team with 58 strikeouts, leading all relievers.
With Richmond, de Marte was an Atlantic 10 All-Academic honoree as he served as a team captain during his final season and led the team with five home runs. He was also a leader on the mound, leading the team with a 2.67 ERA in 17 relief appearances in his final season. During his career, he made 25 total appearances and six starts on the mound. He pitched in 52.2 innings and struck out 54 hitters. As a hitter, de Marte finished with a .298 career average with 15 doubles, five home runs and 51 RBI.
Joining de Marte in obtaining their Israeli citizenship are Corey Baker, Eric Brodkowitz, Gabe Cramer, Blake Gailen, Alex Katz, Jon Mostot, Joey Wagman, Zack Weiss and Jeremy Wolf. Baker, Cramer, Gailen, Katz and Wagman all competed for Team Israeli during the last World Baseball Classic in 2017.
